ILIGAN CITY ~ A Dawlah Islamiyah-Maute Group sub-leader surrendered on Tuesday to the Philippine Army’s 103rd Infantry Brigade (IB) at its headquarters in Kampo Ranao in Marawi City.
The military reported that Abdullah Lumzed Arumpac, alias “Afghan”, sub-leader of the terror group led by the late Abdullah Maute, voluntarily surrendered to 103rd IB commander Colonel Jose Maria R. Cuerpo II.
Afghan brought with him a Colt automatic rifle with one magazine and 20 rounds live ammunition.
The military said Afghan was involved in numerous terroristic activities in Lanao del Sur province including encounters against government troops in Barangay Sandab, Butig in 2015; and in Barangay Ragayan, Poona Bayabao, Lanao del Sur in 2017, where he was wounded and three of his members died.
He was also involved in the planning of the devastating Marawi siege.
“I realized that the best option for me is to return to the folds of law and seek the help of the Local Government Unit of Lumbatan led by Mayor Allan Lao,” Afghan was quoted as saying.
Cuerpo expressed hope that the rebel’s surrender would encourage other members of the terror group to surrender.
“The government is always ready to help former rebels to return to their normal lives,” Cuerpo said.
