Gunmen ambushed on Saturday an ambulance carrying volunteer medical rescuers in Roxas town of Palawan, resulting in the death of a nurse and wounding of another one.
Lt. Col. Imelda Tolentino, spokesperson of the MIMAROPA (Mindoro Oriental and Occidental, Marinduque, Romblon and Palawan) regional police, said they are now investigating the motive behind the attack which includes a possibility that the ambulance was mistaken to be a police car.
She identified the fatality as 51-year old nurse Aljerome Bernardo. Driver Alex dela Peña, on the other hand, suffered bullet wounds and is now in critical condition.
Tolentino said the vehicle with four responders of the Rescue 165 assigned at Dumaran town of Palawan were travelling along the national highway of Barangay Dumarao in Roxas town heading to Puerto Princesa City at around 3 p.m. when gunmen started shooting the car in Sitio Stockpile.
The attack instantly killed Bernardo who was hit in the chest.
Tolentino said they are yet to identify the attackers. (Aaron Recuenco)
