The Quezon City government has taken an action following the death of a 74-year-old man who, along with his house, was swept away by a surging flood at the height of heavy downpour Friday.
In a statement, the local government said that the Department of the Building Official, the City Engineer, the Housing, Community Development and Resettlement Department and the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office will be conducting a joint inspection in K-6, Judge Jimenez in Barangay Kamuning where the victim lived.
Authorities of QC are planning to come up with a recommendation to prevent such incident from happening again.
The local government identified the victim as Romeo Aniez, whose body was recovered from San Juan River in Barangay Damayang Lagi. He died after he and his house fell into a creek and were drifted away by strong current due to heavy rains.
Houses of 13 other families living in the area were also swept away but they were able to escape after either running for safety or being pulled away by concerned individuals from the flood, the city’s rescue team office said.
They are currently taking shelter at one of the city’s parks and covered courts.
The local government said that prior to the coronavirus disease pandemic, the city already coordinated with the National Housing Authority (NHA) for the immediate relocation of families living in the danger zones.
“However, this has yet to be implemented pending additional requirements asked by the receiving LGUs where the NHA has resettlement sites,” the local government explained. (Joseph Pedrajas)
