Tropical depression “Gener” has entered the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) on Thursday morning but is not expected to have a significant impact on the country.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said “Gener” is seen to move northwest to west-southwest towards the northern boundary of the PAR, remaining far from the country’s landmass.
PAGASA estimated the location of the cyclone at 870 kilometers east-northeast of Basco, Batanes before Thursday noon.
It is also likely to weaken into a low pressure area within 12 to 24 hours, the weather bureau said.
“Gener” is the seventh cyclone to enter or form inside the PAR this year, and fourth in August. Aside from Gener, the other cyclones this month were Dindo, Enteng, and Ferdie but none have made landfall.
According to PAGASA, the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ), or the region where the trade winds from the northern and southern hemispheres converge, will remain the dominant weather system that may affect some areas in Luzon, and Visayas and Mindanao within 24 hours. (Ellalyn Ruiz)
