The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has confirmed the death of a former Wirecard executive in the Philippines.
Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra said former Wirecard executive Christopher Reinhard Bauer, German national, died in a hospital in Paranaque City last July 27. “He was subsequently cremated,” said the secretary.
“He was the same person summoned by the NBI in connection with the Wirecard fraud investigation,” he added. The secretary had ordered the NBI to verify the demise of Bauer after receiving reports about his death.
Guevarra said the NBI was able to confirm the identity of Bauer based on official documents submitted to the agency. “He (Bauer) appears to be a Philippine resident, married to a Filipina.
He was in the tour operations business,” the secretary said. Guevarra said Bauer was a former executive of Wirecard Asia.
An initial investigation revealed that in 2015 “an inward remittance to his account from Wirecard Asia was noted, reportedly for consultancy services rendered.”
The secretary ordered last June 24 the NBI to work closely with the Anti-Money Laundering Council (AMLC) in investigating those involved with Wirecard tagged in a US$2.2-billion fraud. (Jeffrey Damicog)
