LOS ANGELES (AFP) – Major League Baseball slapped Texas Rangers pitcher Ian Gibaut with a three-game suspension for intentionally throwing a pitch at San Diego Padres batter Manny Machado, the league announced on Tuesday.
The league said the right-handed pitcher threw at Machado immediately following a four-run homer by Machado’s teammate Fernando Tatis in the Padres 14-4 rout on Monday night.
Rangers manager Chris Woodward also received a one-game ban, the league said in a statement.
The 26-year old Gibaut’s suspension will begin Tuesday against the Padres. Gibaut has an 0-1 record with a 5.40 ERA in 11 appearances this season.
The 21-year-old Dominican Tatis, who leads MLB with 11 homers, drew the ire of the Rangers for swinging at a 3-0 pitch with a seven-run lead in the eighth inning.
Both were also fined but the league declined to reveal the amount.
