A neuropsychiatrist reminded the public the importance of their “biopsychosocial” well-being during this time of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic.
The biopsychosocial framework has three components – biological, psychological, and socio-environmental, said Dr. Alejandro Diaz, a neuropsychiatrist at the UST Hospital and St. Luke’s Medical Center.
“Lahat kasi ito ay interconnected sa health and stress na sakit ng tao at ito ay mas nakikita ngayon sa panahon ng pandemya,” said Diaz during a recent public briefing.
“Alam n’yo itong COVID-19, kailangan tayo ay maging aktibo at resilient….Dapat matuto tayo dito sa COVID-19. Huwag tayong mag panic,” he added.
The condition of one’s body, mental health, and surrounding environment such as interaction with family and friends have an influence on a person’s well-being, said Diaz.
During this difficult time, Diaz said that the public should maintain a strong and healthy body.
“Iwasan mo ‘yung mga processed food (and do) exercise,” he said.
“Hindi naman ‘yung kailangan na pupunta ng gym. Just by walking everyday – ang recommended is 4,500 steps minimum, but of course 10,000 steps is better,” he added.
The physician noted that “physical activity and exercise is very important to reduce anxiety.”
It is also important to have a positive outlook, said Diaz.
“Tingnan natin ‘yung sarili natin ‘ano ba ang ginagawa ko.’ Isulat mo kung nagpa-panic ka, isulat ‘yung ano ‘yung in control ka,” he noted.
He also advised the public to do breathing exercises and sleep at least seven to eight hours a day.
Diaz also emphasized the importance of keeping social connections, particularly with your loved ones. “See to it that everybody is okay,” he said.
“Of course, very important din sa [in] social well-being that we follow the minimum health protocol – wash your hands properly (for) 20 seconds, tamang pagsuot ng mask [proper wearing of face mask], at distansya [and physical distancing],” he added. (Analou de Vera)
