ILOILO CITY – Two vice mayors in Iloilo were infected by coronavirus disease (COVID-19) as locally transmitted cases continue to surge.
Vice Mayors Jeffrey Ganzon of Iloilo City and Almar Marfito of Dumangas town in Iloilo province were among the latest infected with coronovirus. This was confirmed by Mayors Jerry Treñas and Ronaldo Golez, respectively.
“I am saddened to inform you that Vice Mayor Ganzon has been found to be positive in his re-swab. Let us continue to pray for him as we continue to pray for all Ilonggos facing the challenges of COVID-19,” urged Treñas.
Ganzon was admitted at a hospital last August 27 after having a fever while he was also coughing and vomiting. His family initially announced he had mild pneumonia. But in statement released Sunday, the vice mayor himself said he no longer have any symptoms and is feeling better.
In the case of Marfito, he is one of the four local officials of Dumangas town who contracted COVID-19. The other three were two town councilors and a village chief. Golez said the four officials were allegedly infected when someone who has COVID-19 visited the Dumangas Municipal Council’s office.
Last week, COVID-19 also infected two officials in neighboring Capiz province including Governor Esteban Evan Contreras II and provincial top cop Police Col. Julio Gustilo Jr. (Tara Yap)
