Mark Nonoy might just become the latest to leave the University of Santo Tomas Tigers following reports that he is close to joining the Taft-based La Salle Archers.
Sources told Manila Bulletin-Tempo that Nonoy is transferring in the wake of the Sorsogon training bubble, but no official word yet from both camps on this matter at posting.
Nonoy, a product of Negros Occidental, made his presence felt in Season 82 when he bagged the Rookie of the Year honors and helped the Tigers reach their first finals appearance since 2015.
Earlier reports had Adamson showing interest in acquiring Nonoy after photos of him with Adamson coach Franz Pumaren surfaced online.
The same source it did not push through for unknown reason.
Former team captain CJ Cansino was first to leave the Tigers’ lair at the height of the training bubble controversy and transferred to University of the Philippines. Brent Paraiso, Ira Bataller and Rhenz Abando followed suit as they are now committed to play for Letran, while Jun Asuncion has reportedly moved to Mapua.
Their departures have forced head coach Aldin Ayo to tender his resignation by taking full responsibility for the said training that allegedly violated government health protocols. Meanwhile, National University’s JV Gallego is also reportedly leaving for an NCAA school, but official announcements have yet to be made.
Gallego’s ardent suitor is San Beda, the source said.
It can be recalled that NU men’s team has also been hit by controversy after the exodus of future stars – Carl Tamayo, Kevin Quiambao and Gerry Abadiano.
The three high school stars helped power the NU Bullpups to back-to-back championships, including a grand sweep last season.
Worse, head coach Goldwin Monteverde also stepped down due to his reported rift with one of the team backers.
The 6-foot-7 Tamayo and Abadiano are now with the University of the Philippines Maroons while Quiambao opted to play for the Archers next season.
