DAVAO CITY – Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio rejected the postponement of May 2022 national elections as proposed by Pampanga Rep. Juan Miguel “Mikey” Arroyo amid threats of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic.
During her live interview over Davao City Disaster Radio (DCDR 87.5), Carpio said that there is no need to defer the elections even if the pandemic would not be over until the next elections.
She stressed that the threats posed by the outbreak could be resolved by just strictly observing the basic health protocols such as physical distancing, wearing of mask, and frequent hand washing.
She said the voters could also bring their own ballpens and pocket alcohols when they cast their votes.
The Filipino voters will elect the successor of President Duterte in the next elections.
Carpio was constantly eluding questions on her political plans for 2022 in her previous interviews.
But during the 2019 midterm elections, the mayor formed a political party called “Hugpong ng Pagbabago,” which had supported its own senatorial slate – majority of whom won – and forged alliances with political leaders from different parts of the country. (Antonio L. Colina IV)
