More than 1,000 personnel of the Philippine National Police (PNP) are still battling COVID-19 but the recovery rate among them is high.
PNP spokesman Police Col. Ysmael Yu said the recovery rate is at more than 80 percent or 5,093 of the 6,158 of those infected have been cleared of COVID-19.
Almost all of the COVID-19 cases in the PNP were a result of the deployment of policemen as front liners or those manning the border control points and conducting community patrol to enforce quarantine rules.
PNP data said 1,048 police personnel are classified as active cases. They are being treated in medical and isolation facilities of the PNP.
Seventeen policemen have died of COVID-19, most of them in Metro Manila which is considered as the epicenter of the COVID-19 infection.
The PNP recorded 75 new cases last Sunday.
But despite the daily increase in infections, Yu said the law enforcement function of the PNP remains unaffected. (Aaron Recuenco)
