From a super typhoon upon landfall over Catanduanes and Albay, “Rolly” (international name “Goni”) weakened into a typhoon but remains a threat while moving closer to Southern Luzon and Metro Manila Sunday afternoon.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) last observed “Rolly” over the coastal waters of Pasacao, Camarines Sur or 30 kilometers west-southwest of Pili, Camarines Sur around 10 a.m.
It made its first landfall over Bato, Catanduanes around 4:50 a.m. then the second landfall over Tiwi, Albay at 7:20 a.m.
It has slightly weakened but remained a strong typhoon with maximum sustained winds of 215 kilometers per hour near the center and gustiness of up to 295 kph.
From west-southwest, Rolly is now moving west at 25 kph.
Catastrophic violent winds and intense to torrential rainfall associated with the region of the eyewall and inner rainbands of the typhoon was expected within the next 12 hours over the western portion of Camarines Sur, Marinduque, central and southern portions of Quezon, Laguna, eastern portion of Batangas, and Cavite.
It is a particularly dangerous situation for these areas, PAGASA warned.
Signal No. 5 has been lifted but Signal No. 4 remains hoisted over Metro Manila, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Catanduanes, Albay, northern portion of Sorsogon (Donsol, Pilar, Castilla, Sorsogon City, Prieto Diaz, Gubat, Barcelona, Juban, Casiguran, and Magallanes), Burias Island, Marinduque, Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Quezon, including Polillo Islands, Pampanga, Bulacan, southern portion of Aurora (Dingalan), Bataan, southern portion of Zambales (San Marcelino, San Felipe, San Narciso, San Antonio, Castillejos, Subic, Olongapo City, Botolan, and Cabangan), northwestern portion of Occidental Mindoro (Mamburao and Paluan), including Lubang Island, and northern portion of Oriental Mindoro (Puerto Galera, San Teodoro, Baco, Calapan City, Naujan, Pola, Victoria, Socorro, and Pinamalayan).
Signal No. 3 was raised over the rest of Sorsogon, northern portion of Masbate (Mobo, Masbate City, Milagros, Uson, Baleno, Aroroy, and Mandaon), including Ticao Island, the rest of Zambales, Romblon, the rest of Occidental Mindoro, the rest of Oriental Mindoro, Tarlac, southern portion of Nueva Ecija (Cuyapo, Talugtug, Muñoz City, Llanera, Rizal, Bongabon, Gabaldon, Gen. Tinio, Laur, Palayan City, Gen. Mamerto Natividad, Cabanatuan City, Sta. Rosa, Peñaranda, Gapan City, San Isidro, Cabiao, San Antonio, Jaen, San Leonardo, Zaragoza, Aliaga, Talavera, Santo Domingo, Quezon, Licab, Guimba, and Nampicuan), central portion of Aurora (San Luis, Baler, and Maria Aurora), and Northern Samar.
Signal No. 2 was up in the rest of Aurora, Nueva Vizcaya, Quirino, Benguet, La Union, Pangasinan, the rest of Nueva Ecija, the rest of Masbate, northern portion of Samar (Catbalogan City, Jiabong, Motiong, Paranas, Hinabangan, San Sebastian, Tarangnan, Pagsanghan, San Jorge, San Jose de Buan, Matuguinao, Gandara, Sta.Margarita, Calbayog City, Sto. Nino, Almagro, and Tagapul-An), northern portion of Eastern Samar (San Julian, Sulat, Taft, Can-Avid, Dolores, Maslog, Oras, San Policarpo, Arteche, and Jipapad), extreme northern portion of Antique (Pandan, Libertad, and Caluya), and northwestern portion of Aklan (Buruanga, Malay, Nabas, and Ibajay).
Signal No. 1 was raised over mainland Cagayan, Isabela, Apayao, Kalinga, Mountain Province, Ifugao, Abra, Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, northern portion of Palawan (El Nido, Taytay, Dumaran, and Araceli), including Calamian and Cuyo Islands, the rest of the northern portion of Antique (Sebaste, Culasi, Tibiao, Barbaza, and Laua-An), the rest of Aklan, Capiz, northern portion of Iloilo (Lemery, Sara, Concepcion, San Dionisio, Batad, Estancia, Balasan, and Carles), northern portion of Cebu (San Remigio, Bogo City, Medellin, and Daanbantayan), including Bantayan Islands, Biliran, the rest of Samar, the rest of Eastern Samar, and northern portion of Leyte (San Isidro, Tabango, Villaba, Matag-Ob, Palompon, Ormoc City, Pastrana, Palo, Calubian, Leyte, Kananga, Capoocan, Carigara, Jaro, Tunga, Barugo, Alangalang, Sta. Fe, Tacloban City, Babatngon, and San Miguel).
PAGASA said the center of “Rolly” was expected to move towards the Marinduque and southern Quezon area Sunday afternoon.
Afterwards, it was seen to cross the Batangas-Cavite area late afternoon through evening. PAGASA advised the public to brace for heavy to intense with at times torrential rains over Bicol region, Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Quezon, Metro Manila, Marinduque, Romblon, Oriental Mindoro, Occidental Mindoro, Bataan, Bulacan, Aurora, and eastern portions of mainland Cagayan and Isabela.
LAHAR FLOW, STORM SURGES
PAGASA warned that flooding, rain-induced landslides, and sediment-laden streamflows or lahar may occur during heavy or prolonged rainfall especially in areas that are highly susceptible to these hazards.
In the next 24 hours, there was a high risk of storm surge of more than three meters over the coastal areas of Catanduanes and Camarines Norte and the northern coastal areas of Quezon, including Polillo Islands and Camarines Sur; up to three meters over the coastal areas of Metro Manila, Cavite, Bulacan, Pampanga, Bataan, southeastern coastal area of Batangas (facing Tayabas Bay), and most of the southern coastal areas of Quezon; up to two meters over the coastal areas of Marinduque, Lubang Island, Albay, Masbate (including Ticao and Burias Islands), Northern Samar, Eastern Samar, and the remaining coastal areas of Quezon, Camarines Sur, and Batangas.
