The Commission on Elections said nearly 300,000 first time voters have so far registered for the May 2022 national and local elections.
Comelec Commissioner Rowena Guanzon said on Twitter Wednesday that 270,308 first time voters have registered as of Oct. 30 but still far from their target of three million new voters.
“@COMELEC target is 3M new voters who will be 18 on or before May 9,2022,” said Guanzon.
“Help us encourage young people to register,” she added.
Voter registration for the May 2022 polls resumed last Sept. 1 except in areas under enhanced community quarantine or modified ECQ.
The poll body said voter registration will automatically resume in areas under ECQ or MECQ once the quarantine status is either downgraded to general community quarantine or modified general community quarantine or if quarantine is lifted entirely.
According to the Comelec, applications for registration may be submitted from Monday to Thursday, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Office of the Election Officer.
Qualified to register are those who will be at least 18 years of age on or before Election Day, or on May 9, 2022; a resident in the Philippines for at least one year; and resides in the place where he or she intends to vote for at least six months on or before Election Day.
