CAGAYAN – Another vintage bomb has been discovered in the aftermath of heavy flooding brought about by typhoon “Ulysses” in the province.
The bomb, weighing about 1,000 lbs, was discovered near Pinacanauan river in Callao, Peñablanca, Cagayan on Sunday and was transported to EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) unit in Tuguegarao City on Monday.
With the discovery of the bomb which still poses a risk of detonation, Regional Police director Brig. Gen. Crizaldo O. Nieves appealed to the public to report any discovery of unexploded bombs.
“People must be reminded that these items are dangerous, and hence, they should not attempt to keep any of these as souvenirs or use them for any purpose,” said Nieves.
“Nakita ito sa maliit na tributary tabi ng Pinacanauan river. Nag-erode iyong sa maisan na katabi at posible na doon nakabaon,” PRO-2 information officer Lt. Col. Andree Abella said.
The discovery of the bomb was reported Sunday when residents were gathering firewood in the said area. At first, they thought it was just a big firewood.
“Akala nila isang malaking kahoy na pwede nila iuwi, sinubukan pa nila ito pukpukin ng bato ngunit laking gulat na parang bakal, sa takot agad sila tumawag sa barangay at sa pulis,” added Abella.
It can be recalled that on Nov. 26, a 60mm mortar went off inside a house in Barangay Mission in Teresita, Cagayan when members of the Siruno family tried to dismantle the vintage explosive. (Liezle Basa Iñigo)
