CAMP G. NAKAR, Lucena City – Four New People’s Army (NPA) rebels were killed in a 30-minute fierce firefight with government troops in Rizal, Occidental Mindoro on Monday.
The Army’s 2nd Infantry Division under Southern Luzon Command (SOLCOM) said the encounter happened in Sitio Surong, Barangay Aguas, Rizal.
Col. Jose Augusto Villareal, commander of the 203rd Brigade, reported that there were no casualties on the government side.
The gunfight also resulted in the recovery of eight high-powered firearms and documents of the enemy.
The encounter came after concerned citizens reported the rebels’ presence in the area.
Major General Greg Almerol, head of the 2nd Infantry Division, extolled the bravery and cooperation of the residents in the war against insurgency.
Almerol also offered his condolences to the families left behind by those who died during the encounter. (Danny Estacio)
