The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), not the Philippine National Police (PNP), should take over the case of the policeman who killed a mother and her son in Paniqui, Tarlac over the weekend.
In a statement Monday, Agusan del Norte Rep. Lawrence Fortun even called the suspect Sr. Sgt. Jonel Montales Nuezca a “murderer” based on a viral video of the incident.
“Given the intensity of the public outrage over the brutal double murder, it would not be wise for the PNP, Napolcom, or DILG to retain custody and jurisdiction over Jonel Nuezca because the level of distrust in the PNP now is too high,” said Fortun.
“I ask Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra to order the National Bureau of Investigation to take over the case. The Philippine National Police should waive custody and jurisdiction over the police officer. These moves would be prudent and legal. The investigation must be swift. Criminal charges in court must be urgently filed,” he further said.
The National Police Commission (Napolcom) is an attached agency of the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG). Both entities have supervisory function over PNP. (Ellson A. Quismorio)
