A new low-pressure area (LPA) east of Visayas and the tail-end of frontal system may bring rains over Bicol region, Visayas, and parts of Mindanao.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) spotted the LPA at 245 kilometers east of Guiuan, Eastern Samar around 10 a.m. Saturday.
The LPA is less likely to develop into a tropical depression as of the moment, the State weather bureau said.
However, this weather disturbance and the tail-end of frontal system may bring moderate to heavy rains over Biliran, Leyte, Northern Samar, Samar, Eastern Samar, Southern Leyte, Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur, Dinagat Islands, Surigao del Norte, and Surigao del Sur.
Light to moderate with at times heavy rain showers during thunderstorms may also affect Albay, Catanduanes, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Sorsogon, Masbate, Davao Oriental, and the rest of Visayas.
PAGASA warned of possible flooding, including flash floods, and rain-induced landslides that may occur during heavy or prolonged periods of rainfall, especially in areas that are highly susceptible to these hazards.
Other areas that received significant antecedent rainfall over the past couple of days or weeks were also advised to take precautionary measures in case flooding or landslides occur due to these weather disturbances.
Likewise, adjacent or nearby areas that may not have been directly affected by the rainfall were urged to remain alert due to the possibility of flooding from surface runoff or swelling of river channels.
The northeast monsoon or “amihan” still prevailed Saturday, which may bring cloudy skies and rains over Quezon, Marinduque, Romblon, Oriental Mindoro, and Kalayaan Islands.
PAGASA also advised those in these areas to remain alert against possible floods or landslides due to moderate to heavy monsoon rains.
The amihan may also bring light rains over Batanes, Cagayan, Isabela, Quirino, Nueva Vizcaya, Abra, Apayao, Benguet, Ifugao, Kalinga, Mountain Province, and Aurora, while isolated light rains may persist over Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon. However, PAGASA said rains due to the amihan may not have a significant impact over these areas.
PAGASA said the rest of the country will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers due to localized thunderstorms.
It advised the public to take necessary precautionary measures against possible flash floods or landslides in the event of severe thunderstorm activity. (Ellalyn Ruiz)
