Police killed a leader of a gun-for-hire group and his driver after they shot it out with Highway Patrol Group (HPG) policemen in Bacolor, Pampanga, on Monday.
HPG director Brig. Gen. Alexander Tagum said the shootout erupted when the vehicle of Harry Mandahay was cornered on River Control Road in Barangay Cabetican at around 2 a.m. after a brief car chase.
Mandahay was allegedly the leader of a group engaged in gun-for-hire activities that operates in Central Luzon and nearby areas. Aside from him, his driver Jeffrey Diamada was also killed.
Tagum said his men were after the group of Mandahay based on the information fed by the National Capital Region Police Office and the Pampanga police.
“They refused to surrender when they were cornered. They got off the vehicle and started shooting at my men,” said Tagum, adding that it resulted in a shootout.
Recovered in the area were a sedan which is believed to be carnapped, a .45-caliber pistol, two .38-caliber revolvers, four sachets containing shabu, and cellular phones.
