A tricycle driver from Tuguegarao City produced the biggest win in the 2021 Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP) Chess League on Saturday by stunning Grandmaster Darwin Laylo in a tournament held via the lichess platform.
Jake Tasi Tumaliuan, 31, beat Laylo in their rapid match game as the Cagayan Kings outlasted the Cagayan Kings,11-10.
“Panalo na ako sa game natalo pa. Che-checkmate ko na sana eh bumagsak oras ko. I thought may 3 seconds pa ako at s’ya (Jake Tasi Tumaliuan) naman ay 1 second,” said Laylo.
Also winning for Cagayan squad were Emerson Aquio, Robert Mania and Jefferson Villarde.
Meantime, the Laguna Heroes proved too classy over Minus Asia’s First Grandmaster Eugene Torre Rizal Batch Towers, 17.5-3.5.
US-based Rogelio Barcenilla outsmarted International Masters Rolando Nolte in both their rapid and blitz games.
Other winners for the Heroes were GM John Paul Gomez, FIDE Master Austin Jacob Literatus, Woman National Master Jean Karen Enriquez, FIDE Master Jose Efren Bagamasbad, and Vince Angelo Medina.
Based on the scoring system, a win in rapid chess is worth two points, a draw is one point and a loss is zero. In blitz, one gets a point for a win, half point for a draw and zero for a loss.
