CEBU CITY – Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Junard “Ahong” Chan has softened his stance on rapper EZ Mil, whom he criticized for the lyrics of the artist’s hit song “Panalo.”
Chan earlier wanted the rapper be declared persona non grata after the mayor took offense of the “nanalo na ako nung una pa pinugutan si Lapu sa Mactan” line in Mil’s rap song.
But instead of the persona non grata declaration, the mayor has just asked the city council to pass a resolution condemning the lyrics of the song.
The mayor also wanted the rapper to issue a public apology to the Oponganons.
Chan said what the rapper did was disrespectful and a form of mockery of someone that the city considered a hero.
The mayor lamented that the rapper’s supposed false claims on Lapu-Lapu came just as the city is preparing for the 500th year celebration of the Victory at Mactan on April 27.
The city is named after Datu Lapu-Lapu, the island’s chieftain, who led his men in defeating the army of Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan in 1521 in the Battle of Mactan. (Calvin D. Cordova)
