REIGNING world Fischer Random champion Wesley So proved his victory in the Skilling Open last year was no fluke when he re-stamped his class over world champion Magnus Carlsen of Norway to rule the Opera Euro Rapid of the Meltwater Champions Chess Tour Sunday.
Tied at 2-all after the first 4-game match of the title series, So came through with a decisive win right in the first game of their 2nd four-game series then deftly repulsed the repeated comebacks of the world classical titlist to prevail.
So, who is now representing the United States, had the chance to win the fourth game but opted for a safe draw for the win.
So wrapped up the title clash, 4.5-3.5, and pocketed the top purse of $30,000 (roughly P1.5 million)
So thrilled was the former No. 1 Filipino player he made a double-fist pump after sealing the win.
And who would not be?
That was his ultimate aim – beating Carlsen.
Realizing his gesture was a no-no in chess, So apologized.
Not only that the sport is considered a gentleman’s game, it also happened on Carlsen’s 30th birthday – and on a Valentine’s Day.
“I’d like to apologize to Magnus for ruining his Valentine’s Day,” said So.
“It’s big, it’s totally unexpected to beat Magnus in any matches. It’s a huge honor and a real pleasure to do so,” said So in an interview with the tournament website, championschesstour.com.
“Just playing him already gives me a lot of experience and beating him twice in a match is just unheard of.”
After his misjudged sacrifice in the opener, Carlsen had good chances to strike back in the third and fourth, but So was ready for his attack – thanks to his opening game that boosted his confidence.
So’s latest feat catapulted him to the top of the tour leader board with 108 points and a current earnings of $70,000 (P3.5 million) ahead of Azerbaijan’s Teimour Radjabov and Carlsen.
Carlsen rued on several missed opportunities.
“I’m a bit frustrated again today (Monday),” said Carlsen.
“Losing to Wesley is okay, he clearly had the most convincing tournament coming into today. But I do feel like I missed a lot of chances, that’s the frustrating part.”
“Chess is life … one day you are up, one day you are down, so I will enjoy this UP moment and start by giving thanks! To my Lord and Savior, AMDG,” said So. (Kristel Satumbaga) “
