Vic Saludar proved to be the more experienced fighter as he defeated compatriot Robert Paradero to claim the vacant World Boxing Association minimumweight title at the Biñan Football Stadium in Laguna Saturday.
Saludar, 30, from Polomolok, South Cotabato, eked out a split decision against Paradero as he came out aggressive in the final three rounds of the match.
Aquil Tamayo scored the bout 115-113 in favor of Saludar and Danrex Tapdasan had it 116-113 also for the veteran fighter while Alfie Jocosol gave it to Paradero at 118-110.
Saludar, who won the World Boxing Organization miniflyweight title from Ryuya Yamanaka of Japan in July 2018, improved his record to 21 wins with 11 knockouts and four defeats.
Paradero, who was in control of the fight between the seventh and ninth rounds, lost for the first time and has 18 wins with 12 knockouts.
It was the first title fight in the country under strict health protocols due to the COVID-19 pandemic organized by the Elorde International Productions of Gabriel “Bebot” Elorde.
The all-Filipino title match was originally set last September but had to be moved because of the lockdown.
Meanwhile, Mexico’s Oscar Valdez dethroned Miguel Berchelt, knocking him out with one second left in the 10th round in a stunning upset, to claim the World Boxing Council junior lightweight title in Las Vegas Saturday.
Valdez, who scored two knockdowns earlier in the fight, landed a vicious left hook to the head that sent Berchelt crumbling to the canvas at the MGM Grand Hotel.
