The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic did not deter 30 face mask and face shield-wearing couples from getting married during a mass wedding officiated by Taguig City Mayor Lino Cayetano at the Mercado del Lago in Lower Bicutan, Taguig last Friday.
The “Kasalang Bayan” resumes the program by the Taguig Civil Registry Office that was held every quarter of the year before the pandemic hit the city.
“I want to congratulate the couples who said their ‘I do’s’ this afternoon in the beautiful venue overlooking Laguna Bay. I’m pretty sure maraming napa-‘Sana All,’ but other than being a romantic gathering, it is also a historic one,” said Cayetano.
He explained the Kasalang Bayan is part of the Taguig City government’s campaign to inform the public that there are safe ways to do things in the new normal.
Only 30 couples were invited to the mass wedding in order to easily implement social distancing and observe other safety protocols. The organizers also opted to hold the event outdoors to lower the risk of COVID-19 transmission.
According to the city government, Taguig still has the lowest active cases per 100,000 population and lowest case fatality rate in Metro Manila.
It launched the #RoadToZero campaign which encourages citizens to abide by the protocols so that the city can reach zero active cases before mass vaccinations start.
