An officer of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) was shot dead Thursday by a Philippine Army soldier in Sta. Barbara town, Iloilo province.
“This was a result of road rage,” said Colonel Gilbert Gorero, chief of the Iloilo Police Provincial Office (IPPO).
Gorero confirmed that Jail Inspector Andrew Larupay was shot and killed by Sgt. Bjourn Kirby Sanchez Esposo.
Lapuray was driving a white vehicle while Esposo was onboard the truck of the Philippine Army’s 12th Infantry Battalion (12 IB).
The two vehicles were reportedly trying to race each other. When they reached Bangga Dama in Sta. Barbara town, both Larupay’s vehicle and the army’s truck stopped.
An altercation ensued until Esposo shot Larupay, who was assigned to BJMP in La Carlota City, Negros Occidental province.
After the incident, Esposo and his companions fled the scene onboard the Army truck. He was later arrested during a hot pursuit operation.
Gorero said criminal charges will be filed against Esposo and his companions.
