Veteran Gaco delivers big, records tumble in Chooks Mindanao leg
Jerwin Gaco vs fellow veteran Marc Baracael.

PAGADIAN, ZAMBOANGA DEL SUR ‒ Jumbo Plastic-Basilan racked up another dominant win, thrashing Kapatagan, 118-84, in the 2021 Chooks-to-Go Pilipinas VisMin Super Cup Monday at the Pagadian City Gymnasium here.

A day after MisOr broke the record for most points in the young league with 111, Basilan shattered it with its own version of118 on the way to its third straight win, tying Clarin for the lead.

The final scoreline was also the second-most lopsided game in league history at 34, just behind MJAS Zenith Talisay’s 38-point win over Tubigon in the Visayas Leg, 104-66.

The Peace Riders also set the league’s record in most points in a quarter with 41 during the third canto, surpassing KCS Mandaue and MisOr’s 35 point landmark.

In other games, Petra Cement-Roxas nabbed its second win in as many days by outlasting Iligan, 84-79, while JPS Zamboanga City returned to its winning ways with an 85-75 win over MisOr.

Already ahead by 13 going into the second half, the Peace Riders unleashed a crippling 19-2 run to start the first four minutes of the third quarter, opening up an insurmountable 30-point spread, 60-30.

Hesed Gabo spearheaded that huge blast by Basilan, scoring 14 points in that run alone, going 5-of-5 from the field and 3-of-3 from the charity stripe.

The Clarin Vanguards have found their winning touch, raising their win-loss record to 2-2 – the same record of MisOr.

The Vanguards broke a 20-all count by coming through with offensive spurts for a 49-36 advantage.

Roxas playmaker JK Casiño entered the record books with his 12 assists, the most in the Mindanao Leg. He also had five points and five rebounds.

JPS, meantime, used a huge third quarter to enter the final frame up by 14, dropping 26 big points while holding the Brew Authoritea to just 16, 74-60.

But Reil Cervantes’ deuce at the 1:33 mark of the payoff period capped a 15-5 blast by MisOr to be back within four, 75-79.

However, big men Jerwin Gaco and Gabby Espinas connived on a 5-0 run, via a layup and a three-pointer, to seal the win for Zamboanga.

Gaco continued his fine play, producing 24 points on 11-of-16 shooting from the field, to go with 12 rebounds as JPS hiked their win-loss card to 3-2.
