Avowed lesbian and former “The Voice Philippines” contestant Rita Martinez is now diving into acting.
She was handpicked by director Sigrid Andrea Bernardo as lead opposite hottie Rhen Escaño for the Girl Love (GL) series, “Lulu.”
Rita deems it an honor to be chosen by Sigrid.
She told us: “When I found out about the series, I was actually honored because they told me that Direk Sigrid will be directing the show. And of course, working with amazing people, it’s an honor on my part, especially because this will be my first ever show in my entire life. When I read the script, I also told Direk na parang I think it was written exactly for me because sa description pa lang, chef and singer. But I still did my due diligence. I submitted everything that I had to and it’s really an honor to be part of the show.”
When asked why she decided to create a GL series, Sigrid related, “Konti lang ang GL series so I decided to make a series about it. And also, I’ve always wanted to make a lesbian film and yung first feature film ko was ‘Ang Huling ChaCha ni Anita,’and that was in 2012. So I’m very excited to do another project dealing with LGBTQIA+.
Rhen is also quite excited about the project.
She shared: “Gusto ko ‘yung idea na kakaiba ang story niya sa karamihan. Hindi pa naman gaano nata-tackle ito and I’m really happy to be part of it.”
She wants viewers to learn that “love is love. Wala yan sa kesyo babae sa lalaki, sa lalaki sa lalaki, sa babae sa babae…ang love pag naramdaman mo ’yon, love ’yon, e. Wala siyang pinipiling gender. And I love that idea.”
Unlike her past outings “Lulu” is a rom-com, something that appeals to Rhen.
“Gusto ko lumawak pa kasi ang kaalaman ko sa acting and trying out rom-com is a challenge. Nasanay na di ako sa mabibigat na roles. So, ito, iba naman.”
“Lulu” is to stream on Vivamax January 2022.
