The Philippine Postal Corporation (PhilPost) recently unveiled new commemorative stamps of world-renowned Filipinos, including global sports icons.
Among the sports legends included in the first collection of “Salamat – Pagpupugay sa Alamat” series were Asia’s first Grandmaster Eugene Torre, six-time World Cup bowling champion Paeng Nepomuceno and international billiards star Efren “Bata” Reyes.
Also in the series was Fil-Am NBA star Jordan Clarkson.
The commemorative stamps were part of Philpost’s celebration of its 75 years since the country’s first stamp was issued, as well as the 254th anniversary of the Philippine postal service.
Postmaster General and CEO Norman Fulgencio led the unveiling of the first series of commemorative stamps last Nov. 13.
“These icons have fueled Filipino pride and proven that Filipino talent rises to the global standard. They represent the best and brightest Filipinos whose excellence brought international recognition to the Philippines,” said Fulgencio.
The collection has three categories – Living Legends: World-Renowned Filipinos series, Living Legends: Outstanding Filipinos series, and Never Forgotten Series.
Last month, Philpost launched basketball icon Robert Jaworski’s own Living Legend stamp.
Also included in the first collection were tech inventor Dado Banatao, industrial/furniture designer Kenneth Cobonpue, fashion designer Monique Lhuillier, lingerie designer Josie Natori, and broadway star Lea Salonga.
