Juvic Pagunsan got half of the job done after scoring another eight-under-par 64 Saturday and will just need a little more work to do for a big sweep of the awards Sunday in the Southwoods Pro-Am Invitational at the Manila Southwoods Golf and Country Club in Carmona, Cavite.
The 44-year-old Pagunsan made a virtual repeat of his superb performance at the Masters course in the first round a day earlier with an eagle, seven birdies, a bogey and the rest pars to lead his team to a runaway victory in the 36-hole pro-am competition.
Pagunsan’s teammates – outgoing Senate president Tito Sotto, Maru Sotto and Bing Lapus – joined him in a second consecutive net round of 11-under-par 61 that won them the low gross title in the pro-am competition by four strokes over the team of Jhonnel Ababa and his amateur partners Jude Eustaquio, Jet Mathay and Miguel Ochoa.
Barring a major meltdown, Pagunsan also virtually put a lock on the individual pro title and the P200,000 champion’s prize as the former Asian Tour champion surged ahead by seven over amateur Carl Corpus (65-135) and by eight on Justin Quiban (67-36) with a 128 total going into the final 18 holes today at the Masters course.. Sharing pro-am honors with Pagusan and his teammates were Ivan Monsalve and amateur partners Oliver Gan, Francesca Gan and Gab Manotoc and Rupert Zaragosa and amateur partners Bobby Inigo, Carlito Javier and Ferdie Dimaisip. Monsalve and his partners won the Division 1 title by two over Ababa’s team with a net score of 115 (58-57) for 36 holes while the Zaragosa-led squad netted a 111 (54-57) and claimed the Division 2 crown by three over Frankie Minoza and his partners Nolan Enriquez, Almario Alix and Richard Santos.
