Tokyo 2020 Olympian Juvic Pagunsan capped a virtuoso performance with a bogey-free five-under-par 67 yesterday to crown himself the inaugural Southwoods Pro-Am champion at the Manila Southwoods Golf and Country Club in Carmona, Cavite.
After building an overnight lead of seven strokes, the 44-year-old Pagunsan simply overpowered the course and a hapless field with a brilliant display of shotmaking never seen before at the Manila Southwoods golf complex, coasting to an 11-stroke victory over Justin Quiban.
It was performance that should be one of Pagunsan’s best in his long storied career.
When it was finally over, Pagunsan had on his three scorecards for the 54-hole event an eye-popping collection of two eagles, 19 birdies – including the five in yesterday’s final round at the Masters course – and two bogeys that translated to a whopping 21-under total of 195.
The result was a total domination of the rest of the field that was left battling for second place from day one. And that honor went to Quiban who submitted his third straight sub-par round of two-under 70 for a 10-under 206, impressive by local standard but simply inferior with the way Pagunsan trampled the courses.
Lost in the shadow of Pagunsan’s superb and steady form was the outstanding play of amateur Carl Corpus, a member of the multi-titled Southwoods team playing out of San Jose State who salvaged a tie for third place with Gerald Rosales with a 73 and a 208 aggregate.
Rosales also had some sort of a comeback story as it ended a long struggle to recall the form that made him one of the Asia’s best amateurs. His 70, 68 and 70 scores and no scores over par were the best in a tournament Rosales had done in years.
“I just hope that we can do this again next year. I wish to thank Southwoods chairman Bob Sobrepena and the club membership for hosting this pro-am event for us pros,” said Pagunsan.
Sobrepena himself kept a positive attitude toward the Southwoods Pro-Am becoming an annual event after the success of its inaugural staging despite the limited time the club had to prepare. The individual win gave Pagunsan a P200,000 from the P1 million total pot raised from the sponsorhips.
He had earlier powered his team also made up of outgoing Senate President Tito Sotto, Maru Sotto and Bing Lapus to victory in the low gross competition of the pro-am for a sweep of the event’s two major awards.
