Even in volleyball, Letran proved superior than Intramuros neighbor Mapua as the Lady Knights romped to 25-17, 25-21, 25-18 victory Wednesday in NCAA competition at the Paco Arena in Manila.
Though already out of semis picture, the Lady Knights still played inspired game, coming through with ferocious attacks and frustrating the Lady Cardinals several times with their air-tight defense to nail their second win in eight games.
In basketball finals, the Knights swept the Cardinals to complete their back-to-back romp.
More than ending their three-game slide, the Lady Knights foiled Mapua’s bid to secure at least a playoff for the last semis berth as it slipped to an even 4-4 mark.
Julienna Castro pumped in 19 points for the Lady Knights and spearheaded the assault late in the third where they scored five straight points to pull away for good.
Castro scored three points on that stretch before Edma Musngi’s drop shot sealed the win for Letran.
“Nothing to lose, more to gain – yun yung tinatak ng mga coaches namin sa isip namin kaya in-apply namin sa larong ito,” said Castro.
Chamberlaine Cunada also shone for the Lady Knights with 14 points off 12 kills, while Shereena Urmeneta chipped in 11 points.
Letran exposed Mapua’s weak offense and reception by converting more attacks, 47-28, and had more digs, 78-48.
None from Mapua scored in double figures with Jonina Fernandez held to nine points.
