Gilas Pilipinas ran into the great wall and suffered a stinging 21-11 defeat to China in the Pool C of the FIBA 3×3 Asia Cup at the Marina Bay Sands in Singapore on Saturday, July 9.
The Chinese were just too big and too strong for the Filipinos as they simply had their way both in the offense and defensive end to take the victory with still 1:36 to spare in the clock.
Gilas did its best to compete but China’s length obviously bothered the Filipinos who just couldn’t keep their offense going.
Lervin Flores topped the Filipinos with four points while Joseph Eriobu and Almond Vosotros who led the way for Gilas in the qualifying draw settled with three and two points only.
China, on the other hand, was spearheaded by Zeyi Liyu’s nine points while Jiaren Zhao and Jiayi Zhao added six and five respectively.
Despite the loss, Gilas still finished second in its group with a 1-1 and thus still advanced to the quarterfinals.
The Filipinos bucked a slow start to beat host team Singapore, 21-17 while China defeated the same team 22-13 earlier in the day.
The Filipinos are facing Pool A top seed Mongolia in the crossover quarterfinals at presstime.
