Bolden scores hat trick as Filipinas storm past Indonesians

Sarina Bolden

By CARLO ANOLIN

Sarina Bolden is just one of the many members of the gritty Filipinas who have felt the massive support of Filipino fans at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
Making seven goals so far in the 2022 AFF Women’s Championship, Bolden hopes for one last hurrah from the Filipino fans in their championship match against group stage tormentor Thailand at 7:30 p.m. Sunday.

Like a wounded lion, the Filipinas are raring to roar and proclaim their new-found status as the “giant slayer” in the region.

“It’s amazing. It’s electric when you’re out there,” said the 26-year-old Bolden. “It’s hard playing against a home crowd. We definitely know that experience playing in the SEA (Southeast Asian) SEA Games against Vietnam
“But when you have that home crowd, it’s the greatest feeling and it really, really does help,” added the tournament’s top scorer.
Against reigning champion Vietnam on Friday night, July 15, the Philippines pulled off a stunning 4-0 win in front of a strong-3,233 crowd led by a group known as “Ultras Filipinas.”
The bleachers’ area was also filled with spectators bringing their respective props to show support for the Filipinas.
Both Bolden and national team head coach Alen Stajcic have been urging more fans to watch games live and they only have only until Sunday, July 17, to do so as the Philippines take on Thailand at 7:30 p.m. in the finals match.
In their last game in the group stage, the Thais were able to eke out a 1-0 victory over the Filipinas.
“The numbers have been growing and I absolutely love that,” said Bolden. “And I hope it continues to grow in this final championship game.”

The World Cup-bound Filipinas achieved yet another milestone as the first national football team to reach the finals of a major international competition and head coach Alen Stajcic couldn’t be happier.
“To make the first final in history (by a Philippine football team) is a massive occasion. It is a special moment,” said Stajcic.
“It was a complete performance, probably it was the best performance that the Philippine women’s team had in international football,” added the Australian mentor.
