The Philippine government, through the Philippine Sports Commission, lauded the golden performances of the national women athletes who emerged triumphant in karate, weightlifting and the ‘in thing” these days – football.
“For July, we have a lot of reasons to cheer for. In sports, women are brimming with success and talent for this month, and it is something to celebrate and be proud of,” said PSC Officer in Charge, Atty. Guillermo Iroy Jr.
National karateka Junna Tsukii opened the month with her gold medal feat at the World Games in Birmingham, USA.
For her effort, the Fil-Japanese, who received PSC assistance amounting to P1.3 million, is set to receive a P1 million monetary incentive under RA 10699.
Rose Jean Ramos, another pride of Zamboanga, won 4 golds, 1 silver and 1 bronze medal in the women’s 45kg category at the Asian Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championship in Tashkent, Uzbekistan Monday night.
Ramos swept all the gold medals staked in Youth with 70kg in snatch, 83 kg in clean and jerk for a total lift of 153kg. She also snatched 1 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze in the Junior competition.
Her effort came a day after Angeline Colonia won 2 golds and 1 silver medal in a feat that saw her break a world and Asian marks.
Not to be left out was Prince Keil delos Santos who bagged 2 bronzes in Men’s 49kg category.
The three winning lifters are part of the 17-man Philippine Weightlifting team composed of 13 athletes and 4 coaches in the ongoing event being held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
But it was the Philippine National Women’s Football team which captured the imagination of the entire nation when the Filipinas made history by winning their first AFF crown at the decades-old Rizal Memorial Stadium on Sunday.
Fittingly enough, they won the title at expense of reigning titlist Thailand, 3-0.
“Such honors inspire us even more to support the aspirations of our Filipino athletes, especially the young ones. We are grateful for all their sacrifices and love for the country,” said Iroy.
