Who says you need marquee names to make a movie work?
“Pathirsty” is proof it could be done.
The movie, a sexy-comedy, stars not-so-mainstream names in Kych Minemoto, Adrianna So, Alex Diaz as ably supported by the likes of Bob Jbeili, Kate Alejandrino, Chad Kinis, and PJ Abellana.
The story is not really unique. It is simply about two best friends falling for the same guy. But it veers from the rote celebrating gender diversity.
The best friends are bi and gay. The guy they’re after is bi as well. The rest of the characters identify as gay, pansexual, non-binary.
Intriguing as it may be, it remains to be seen if patriarchal Philippines as a whole – is ready for something like this, really.
One would even think the creators foolish for even trying. Particularly that they depicted the guy’s father, the only straight character in the film, the bad guy.
Talk about rubbing salt to injury.
Whatever the case may be, director Ivan Payawal, who also wrote the screenplay with Ash Malanum, is not at all worried.
He is more than happy with “Pathirsty.”
He said, “I think this is the first time magkaroon ng pelikula kung saan halos lahat ng character na involved ay queer and I’m quite proud of that.”
The film doesn’t preach. It doesn’t prod audiences to champion the LGBTQ cause. It simply wants viewers to have fun immersing themselves in the topsy-turvy lives of queer people finding their place in the world.
It now streams on Vivamax.
