Training and competing abroad require lots of moolah to sustain one’s competitiveness – not to mention living comfortably away from the family.
But pole vault superstar EJ Obiena is willing to sacrifice a little to help a legend in need, a legend whom he idolized growing up.
“I am also here today because I am standing on the shoulders of giants. The legends of Philippines Athletics who paved the way for me. Who brought attention and success to athletics. I owe them a debt of gratitude. I thank them for the route they have forged for us today,” said Obiena in a social media.
So whatever Obiena gets from his record-breaking performance in the recent World Athletics Championships – most likely P250,000 as incentive from the Philippine Sports Commission – he will be donating to former Asian sprint queen Lydia de Vega-Mercado.
Before boxer and former Sen. Manny Pacquiao and the so-called Gilas, Azkals, Malditas or Filipinas broke into national consciousness, de Vega – with her good looks and powerful strides – was the face the Philippine sports in the 80s.
“I have just learned of the plans of PSC to reward me with 250,000 pesos incentive for breaking the Asian Record. This is deeply appreciated, and certainly needed since my funding is still yet to be sorted, despite the mediation agreement,” Obiena said.
“However, on the flight back to Italy, it occurred to me that despite my own training needs, Mam Lydia needs this money more than I do. So, I am hereby pledging to gift these 250,000 pesos once paid, directly to the family of Lydia De Vega for her medical expenses.”
Bless your soul EJ Obiena, your “Ma’am Lydia” needs the all the help – money and prayers – she can to beat the dreaded Big C (breast cancer).
De Vega-Mercado, 57, was reportedly in critical condition after undergoing brain surgery earlier this month.
Obiena added that his advisers Jim and Carol Lafferty are matching his donation, making his team to donate a total of P500,000.
