JRU’s Amores does it again, runs amok, punches 2 CSB players

JRU's John Amores (GMA/NCAA)

By NIKOLE JAVIER

John Amores has been officially removed from the Jose Rizal University men’s basketball team following his rampage during their second round game against College of St. Benilde in the NCAA Season 98 on Nov. 8.

The 23-year-old Amores, who was slapped with an initially suspended indefinitely by the University and the NCAA, “will no longer be part of any sports program of JRU, effective immediately.”

Currently facing two separate criminal charges for his outburst –– the first against UP’s Mark Belmonte and the recent one filed by CSB’s Jimboy Pasturan and Taine Davis last week.

“After a thorough evaluation, the board is convinced that additional sanctions should be imposed against him as part of the internal processes on discipline observed by the school,” the school said in a statement on Tuesday, Nov. 15.

With the development, the school revealed to be taking necessary steps regarding the case and avoid the same situation from occurring within its student-athletes.

“To mitigate the impact of all these impositions and to recognize its moral obligations to assist its students, the University has set up a program with medical specialists in sports mental health and wellness for our athletes to address the difficulties of handling the mixed challenges of athletic competition, academics, and personal issues. Mr Amores will also be provided counseling and help to cope with the strain of what has taken place in his young life,” the statement continued.

“Consistent with the mission and goals of the Univerity and the NCAA, we reiterate our commitment that we will do everything to mold our student-athletes to be responsible citizens and better individuals in and out of the sporting arena,” it concluded.
