Filipino fencers continued their hot form and collected three gold medals in the junior competitions of the Southeast Asian Federation Fencing Championships in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia recently.
Andre Dominic Agatep flashed his brilliance and thumped Vietnamese rival Truong Huy Hoang, 15-9, to capture the junior men’s saber gold.
Seeded third in the 41-player field, Agatep earned an opening-round bye before routing Thailand’s Narangsi Changadvej, 15-6; Cambodia’s Phirak Phearin, 15-5; Thailand’s Chainaken Supanut, 15-8; and Vietnam’s Le Van Bang, 15-9, before thrashing Truong.
Also winning gold medals are the junior team women’s foil composed of Martina Jene Baccay, Hannah Dominique Belarmino, Miyake Capina and Janna Allysah Catantan, and the junior team women’s saber of Maiev Tyrande Boy, Meagan Elizabeth Co Say, Kaikaku Dela Serna and Arianna Tiu.
The PH delegation also bagged two silver and five bronze medals.
The two silvers came from Belarmino in the junior women’s foil and Kaikaku Dela Serna in the junior women’s saber.
Belarmino lost the gold medal to Malaysia’s Surayya Rizzal, 15-7, while Dela Serna bowed to Pham Thi Huyen of Vietnam, 15-6, in the final round.
The five bronze medals, meanwhile, came from Catantan in junior women’s foil, Louise Marti Shoemaker in junior men’s foil, Ashley Mae Michelle Harrison and Alexa Larrazabal in junior women’s epee, and the junior team men’s epee of Jose Faber Cabrera, Rex Dela Cruz Jr., Joseph Anthony Godbout and John Dexter Ramos.
