Angelis Resort stole the thunder from the fancied teams, sweeping Pool elims to secure a spot in the cross-over quarterfinals on Saturday at the start of the 1st Uratex Philippine Women’s 3×3 International Invitational at Robinsons Magnolia Mall’s activity center in Quezon City.
The team of the sweet-shooting Camille Claro, Jenina Solis, Blanche Bahuyan and Maryjoy Galicia sent shockwaves early in the elims with a 21-15 upset of favorite G2L2 of South Korea.
Inspired, Angelis Resort belles went on to score a thriller in their next match – an 18-16 decision over fellow PH team Uratex Tibay – to secure a quarterfinals berth in the two-day event dubbed as Manila Hustle 3×3.
Thailand’s Shoot It Dragons and Philippines’ Discovery Perlas finished with similar 1-1 slates but the Thais claimed the Pool B top seed via superior quotient.
Also securing quarterfinal berths were Discovery Perlas, Army Altama and Lady McBeth Riots for Philippines and two Japanese teams Zoos Tokyo and Owls.Exe Kujukuri.
Bannered by Japan’s top 2 3×3 players in Aoi Katsura and Yuka Maeda, Zoos Tokyo beat two Philippine teams ‒ Army Altama (18-16), and Lady Macbeth Riots (16-15) in Pool D.
Owls.Exe Kujukuri also swept its group C assignments, dominating Singapore’s Jumpshot (22-8), and the Philippines’ Uratex Dream (21-13) to remain in contention for the coveted trophy and championship prize of $3,000.
Discovery Perlas, composed of Allana Lim, Raiza Dy, Hazelle Yam and Xiaojing Zheng, made it to the next round with a 21-9 drubbing of Jumpshot while Lady McBeth Riots beat Uratex Tibay, 21-14, and Army Altama G2L2, 21-7.
Koreans 1Eyehansol denied Uratex Dream to make it to the next round via a 19-15 victory.
