University of Santo Tomas beat Ateneo in straight sets, 25-19, 25-23, 25-14, in the first round of the UAAP Season 85 women’s volleyball tournament on Wednesday, March 15, at the Filoil EcoOil Centre in San Juan City.
The Golden Tigresses finally got back at their Season 84 stepladder semifinal tormentor Blue Eagles to improve 4-2 in the standings.
Regina Jurado led the charge for UST with 15 points off 12 attacks and three aces, while veteran Eya Laure chipped in 10 in the swift victory.
Despite finishing with three players in double figures, Ateneo was practically undone by its 25 unforced errors UST’s 11.
Vanie Gandler paced Ateneo with 13 points, while Lyann De Guzman and Faith Nisperos contributed 11 each as they absorbed their fourth straight defeat for a 1-5 record.
Meantime, Chenie Tagaod and Jovelyn Fernandez connived to lift Far Eastern University past the gritty University of the East, 25-19, 18-25, 25-12, 22-25, 15-5.
The Lady Tamaraws had to dig deep to turn away the touch challenge of the Lady Warriors and improved to a 3-3 slate in the standings.
