The Gymnastics Association of the Philippines (GAP) has expressed high hopes for the Filipinos who will compete in the 19th Junior and 14th Senior Rhythmic Gymnastics Asian Championship starting today at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium in Manila.
“They’re exposed in different international competitions, also in the Worlds they’re participating. It is very important our gymnasts are exposed in this level of competition,” said GAP competition manager Anna Lou Carreon during Tuesday’s PSA Forum at the Rizal Sports Complex in Manila.
The four-day event will serve as qualifier to the World Championship in Valencia, Spain on Aug. 23-27.
“In this event we might see the future of Philippine Gymnastics,” added Carreon who was accompanied by GAP deputy secretary-general Rowena Bautista in the weekly forum presented by San Miguel Corporation, MILO, Philippine Sports Commission, POC, and the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR).
Representing the country are Breanna Labadan, Trisha Mae Montefalcon, Jasmine Ramillo, Andrea Mae Emperado, Jenny Eusebio and Katrina Loretizo.
This will mark the first time the country will host the Asian Championship, the event will start on May 31 until June 3 with 20 countries participating, including powerhouse China.
The qualified athletes will be heading to the 40th FIG Rhythmic Gymnastics World Championships in Spain on Aug. 23-27.
World champion Carlos Yulo is not vying in the event that offers 16 gold medals but the GAP assured that the country will field bets, who may be the next Carlos Yulo.
