A nine-man Philippine soft tennis team tries to make another statement when it competes in the 2023 NongHyup Bank Korea Cup starting Friday, June 16 until June 21 in Incheon, South Korea.
Princess Catindig and Bien Zoleta, double gold medalists in last month’s 32nd Southeast Asian Games in Cambodia, spearhead the squad composed of fellow SEAG champions Joseph Arcilla and Virvien Bejosano, as well as Dheo Talatayod, Christy Sañosa, Bea Ebriega, Samuel Nuguit and junior player Ryan Carpio.
The tournament serves as part of the team’s buildup for the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, China late September where it aims to make heads turn anew following their impressive showing in the SEAG.
The PH team was a big revelation in the biennial meet that saw the Nationals capture three gold, one silver and one bronze medals in a performance it would like to replicate not only in the Korean tilt, but also in the quadrennial event.
Some members of the squad were already in Korea for a 15-day training camp with the Korean team at the Jincheon National Center with hopes of intensifying their skills leading up to the meet.
Men’s and women’s singles will start on June 16, followed by men’s and women’s doubles on June 17, mixed doubles on June 18, and men’s and women’s team event on June 19 and 20.
