A popular Filipino urban legend is set to hit cinemas in Viva’s “Mary Cherry Chua.”
Mary Cherry Chua is said to be an intelligent young student who was raped and killed by a school janitor.
According to urban legend, her spirit still wanders the school premises.
But which school?
Said director Roni S. Benaid, “There are many versions to this story. Along the way, nabago na ang mga pangalan, sitwasyon, at name ng school. Bata pa alang ako, alam ko na ang story ni ‘Mary Cherry Chua.’ Gusto ko siyang ire-introduce sa generations ngayon.”
Playing the role of Mary Cherry Chua is Abby Bautista.
She said, “Matatakutin ako pero like most, I like watching scary films. Hopefully magustuhan din ito ng horror fans.”
Playing Karen, the high school student eager to find out the truth about May Cherry Chua’s death is Ashley Diaz, daughter of actor Joko Diaz who also appears in the film as a school teacher.
She said, “Excited ako about this film kasi it’s my first movie at lead pa so, I am hoping that it would do good.”
Is she fond of horror films?
“Before when I was younger pero after watching ‘The Conjuring’ ayoko na!”
So how does it feel working with your dad and in your launching film at that?
“It’s a good thing kasi naga-guide niya ako,” Ashley related.
Joko is proud of his daughter.
“It’s her time to shine and I’m so happy for her,” he said. “Siyempre, I’m here to support and guide her.”
Karen will dig deeper into Mary Cherry Chua’s death with the help of her classmates Paco (Kokoy De Santos), and Faith (Lyca Gairanod).
Karen’s protective sister Lena (Krissha Viaje) will also join in on the fun.
Playing a very important role in the film is Alma Moreno.
“Mary Cherry Chua,” hits cinemas July 19.
