Gilas girls stamped their class and demolished Maldives, 144-22 to stay perfect through two games in the FIBA U16 Women’s Asian Championship at the Prince Hamza Hall in Amman, Jordan on Tuesday evening, July 11.
The Filipinas were simply unforgiving on the defensive end against their lesser talented foes, limiting them to single digits in all of the quarters while also forcing them to a whopping 73 turnovers which also fueled Gilas’ offense.
Gilas started out guns blazing, taking a commanding 19-0 lead and simply never looked back en route to the record win that also virtually secured its place in the semifinals.
The Filipinas ended the opening frame on a 41-5 advantage and didn’t show any letup in the ensuing quarters as the 144 points they recorded is now the most points scored in any game in both divisions in this edition.
Sophia Canindo almost singlehandedly eclipsed Maldives’ scoring with her 21 points, 12 rebounds and six assists as nine other Filipinas scored in double digits.
Cristina Lapasaran and Nevaeh Smith had 16 points apiece while Ava Fajardo had 15 points, nine rebounds and five assists. The Filipinas also showered their opponents with 15 triples, 58 field goals in total as compared to Maldives’ only 30 fgs and single triple.
Shirhan spearheaded their team by scoring 11 points. Kalsa Nimal and Ana Simad had four points each in a losing cause.
Gilas can close out the group stage spotless when it takes on Jordan on Thursday, July 13.
