Many have been wondering about film director Darryl Yap.
He has been missing in action for some time now and a lot of speculations have emerged since.
Some say Viva has placed him in “limbo” for being too “controversial.”
But is it the truth?
Well, we caught up with Darryl himself recently and he was quick to laugh off the assumptions.
“None of them are true,” he said. “I’ve been busy. Truth be told, I’m doing a lot of corporate work, something that I’ve been doing prior to becoming a film director. I’m a strategist and when I’m not doing films, I go back to that.”
As to Viva supposedly canning him if only temporarily, he said, “No. I’ve been talking to Boss Vic (Del Rosario). We have several films lined up already. The truth is I asked them for a break. Naging unhealthy sa akin working on ‘Martyr Or Murderer.’ Napakahirap ng naging proseso noon to say the least.”
Many love (and hate) Darryl for being audacious, coming up with films seemingly meant to shock.
Is it deliberate?
He said, “I guess 50-50. Now, I know nakaka-offend. But you should understand that as a filmmaker with a background on social media (socmed), I think differently than most. Gamay ko na socmed, na ang bawat bash ay cash. So, I apply it in filmmaking. Naniniwala ako na ang engagement, discussion, debate, they’re actually very beneficial to my bank account and of course, the promo of the film.”
And it works.
His films have been huge box office hits, going on to earn him several awards in the process, including “Most Remarkable Director of the Year” at the 2022 Gawad Dangal Filipino Awards, “Best Director of the Year’” and “Blockbuster Director of the Year” at the 2022 Golden Globe Royal Achievement Awards, and another Best Director award from Gawad Pilipino 2022 Icon Awards.
Darryl isn’t the only one to benefit from his daring.
Many of the actors who worked with him became more marketable.
Under his direction, Kim Molina won Movie Best Supporting Actress of the Year at the 51st Guillermo Mendoza Box Office Awards for “Jowable.”
The lead stars of “MiM” also won major awards at the Gawad Pilipino 2022 Icon Awards: Cristine Reyes as Best Actress, Diego Loyzaga as Best Actor, Ruffa Gutierrez as Best Supporting Actress, Cesar Montano as Best Supporting Actor, and Elizabeth Oropesa as Iconic Artist of the Year.
In total, Darryl has megged 14 full length movies, two mini-series, one short film.
He is set to come out with a new offering this November.
“Para Kang Papa Mo”, his 15th directorial film, stars Mark Anthony Fernandez, Nikko Natividad, Zeus Collins, Eric Fructuoso, and Jao Mapa.
The comedy-drama tells the story of an ex-convict who reforms and makes sacrifices to ensure his son’s education. But just when he thought that they’re on their way to brighter days, he faces another blow.
He has worked with the likes of Sharon Cuneta. Is there a so-called “dream artist” in his list?
“Wala naman. I’m willing to work with everyone. Ang sa akin they have to be able to adjust to my style. Kung kaya nila then, good.”
