David Pomeranz is not a huge fan of social media.
He told us so, recently, making clear how he considers the platform “irritating.”
He says, “It’s all about me, me, me…watch me do this, watch me do that. I feel like it has taken away so much from the artist in that, today, it is now all about self-promotion rather than the actual creation of art.”
He adds, “I miss the days when the artists were simply left to imagine, create, write. It is then up to the powers that be to spread the word and promote it. Now, with social media, it’s all about self-promotion first and foremost.”
Of course, he makes use of YouTube himself.
He explains, “Well, that’s way they do it now so…”
If anything, David, 72, appreciates the fact that social media keeps him hip to what’s current.
“It’s all there,” he says, mentioning how it enables him to listen to his old favorites as well as newer tunes like “Radioactive” by Imagine Dragons.
Wait. The guy who wrote “Born For You” actually listens to Imagine Dragons?
Well, David loves music. He doesn’t have any biases relating to genre.
“I like lots of songs, even those sung by K-pop groups,” he says. “For me, it’s all about getting hit here (touches chest). It doesn’t matter what genre. At the end of the day, it’s all about the music, music that touches the heart, touches the soul.”
It is what keeps him going.
“It’s all about the music. I still have the passion for it. I love creating, writing, listening to music. I guess when the passion’s gone that is when I call it a day.”
David is back in the country for a series of concerts.
The Manila leg will be on Dec. 8 at the Newport Performing Arts Theater.
He will also perform in Zamboanga on Dec. 3, Cagayan de Oro on Dec. 4, Pangasinan on Dec. 5, Legazpi, Bicol on Dec. 10, Oriental Mindoro on Dec. 12, Tacloban City on Dec. 15, Samar on Dec. 17, and Iloilo on Dec. 19.
What is it about the Philippines that keeps him coming back after all these years?
He says, “I feel welcomed. I have so many friends here.”
“And I like it that I could be myself here more than anywhere. I feel safe. Isn’t that interesting? I never said that before. I really feel quite at home here.”
