Don’t be surprised if Karl Jahriel Eldrew Yulo would become the next big thing in Philippine gymnastics – better than his world champion brother Carlo.
His grandfather Rodrigo Frisco believes so.
“Mas magaling ito (Eldrew) kesa sa kanyang kuya,” said Frisco.
Frisco knows where he speaks off being largely credited for the older Yulo’s meteoric rise.
Without batting an eyelash, Frisco expressed his belief that Eldrew will surpass his older brother in skill.
That is if he could a top-notch coach like his brother who trained hard in Japan under a revered coach to become the first Filipino world champion.
This early, the younger Yulo showed great promise by dominating the Batang Pinoy by winning seven gold medals already.
Carrying the banner of Manila City, Yulo was simply a cut above the rest in the Boys’ FIG Juniors 14-17 category, topping all the individual events – vault, still rings, floor exercise, high bar, parallel bar, pommel horse, and the individual all-around—at the GAP Gym in Intramuros, Manila.
The 15-year-old Yulo appeared poised to claim an eighth gold pending the official results of the team event where Yulo was part of the Manila squad, subject to deliberation by the technical committee.
There’s also a plan for Yulo to join the seniors event in the Philippine National Games starting on Thursday.
‘DARK SIDE’
Yulo’s brilliance and great individual feats were overshadowed the chaos that hit both the BP and PNG events.
Widespread complaints over lack of suitable venues for several events – in particular arnis and chess – and time constraint over scheduling of the games marred the both events Tuesday.
Late arrival of beddings and funds were the other complaints of several coaches and officials who expressed anger on social media.
They also complained why both BP and PNG were staged simultaneously.
“Why in heaven’s name they combined the PB and PNG?” said one official. “Parents came from far places and they spent their own money not to experience this kind of mismanagement. Hirap bumili ng tickets at mahal pa.”
