The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas has formally named Barangay Ginebra head coach Tim Cone as the man at the helm for the Nationals for the upcoming qualifying windows of the FIBA Asia Cup.
The federation made the announcement on Monday, Jan. 29 as it hopes to follow up the banner year for the national team in 2023 where it ended a 61-year-long title drought in the Hangzhou Asian Games which, interestingly, happened under the leadership of the multi-titled mentor.
“Coach Tim accomplished what has not been done in decades with only a few weeks to prepare and multiple challenges in terms of personnel so we’re excited to see what he can accomplish with a long-term program in place especially if such program is supported by all basketball stakeholders.” said SBP President Al Panlilio.
Joining the veteran coach at the sidelines is his tried-and-tested deputy Richard del Rosario who will take the role as the team manager, succeeding SMC Sports Director Alfrancis Chua who played a vital role to the formation of the gold medal winning Gilas team.
As for the composition of the team, Cone handpicked an interesting blend of established PBA stars and the country’s young talents playing abroad.
The core of the Gilas’ golden team led by Scottie Thompson, June Mar Fajardo and Calvin Oftana is set to serve as the pillar of the newly built squad.
Joining them are fellow PBA stars Chris Newsome, CJ Perez and Jamie Malonzo along with B.League players Dwight Ramos, AJ Edu, Carl Tamayo, and Kai Sotto.
Completing the local crew is UAAP Most Valuable Player Kevin Quiambao while resident Ginebra import Justin Brownlee is taking the naturalized player spot although pending FIBA’s decision regarding his eligibility in upcoming tournaments.
