San Beda University Alumni Association continues to lend its hands and nurture its current and future athletes after launching “B Red in Sports” as part of its Grand Alumni Homecoming celebration on Saturday, Feb. 3, in Mendiola, Manila.
With financial support coming from their alumni, the inaugural program aimed to raise the bar and further the development of the Red Lions men’s and women’s sports programs.
“B Red in Sports will benefit all athletes, mag-iistart kami mag funding para sa lahat ng sports ng San Beda,” said SBU swimming team head coach Dondon Roxas.
“So yung mga objectives namin yung sa recruitment, education, and lahat para sa Bedan athletes. This program, we will be backed by our alumni so we’re hoping it will be a success, para na rin sa mga bata and for them to reach their true potentials,” he added.
According to Roxas, coaches from their respective sports talked about how the program will focus on sports outside the more popular ones like basketball.
Atty. Jiboy Cabochan, an avid San Beda fan and alumnus, praised the efforts to give more attention to other sports especially with football coach Aris Caslib also leading the way.
“Magandang project to na ni-launch ni coach Aris Caslib, putting up this program, to primarily support all athletes, especially not only in basketball,” Cabochan stressed.
“Obviously, centerpiece ang basketball sa NCAA. It’s a good move, maybe not equal but substantially magkaroon,” he added.
Recently, the Mendiola-based squad reigned supreme in the NCAA Season 99 men’s basketball tournament, which brought joy for the Alumni, who are used to San Beda winning championships in the grand old league.
“Masaya ang Christmas ng Bedan dahil sa pamaskong binigay ng Red Lions, naibalik na ulit sa amin ang crown kaya everybody is happy,” Roxas said.
San Beda already ruled men’s Badminton and both divisions in Taekwondo and Swimming this season.
