The National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) will no longer allow its student-athletes to play in professional leagues starting on its centennial season, the league announced on Thursday, Feb. 8.
The grand old league has opted to remove the Games and Amusement Boards’ “special guest license” or SGL pass, which allows collegiate players to compete in higher competition but remain attached to their respective schools.
GAB granted the license in 2020 to safeguard the status of top amateur players who wish to play in the pro leagues to earn extra income while awaiting for the return of collegiate leagues.
It was started in the midst of Covid pandemic after all face-to-face activities were put on hold including the collegiate tilt, forcing players like Kurt Reyson of the Letran Knights to play in the pro league even for a short period of time.
