Uratex Dream team owner Peachy Medina is hopeful that the Women’s PBA 3×3 Invitational will just be the start of bigger things for women’s 3×3 basketball in the country.
“We just have to be steadfast. We’re happy with what we’ve accomplished, but we still need more,” she said.
Uratex ruled the WPBA 3×3 on Monday, Feb. 19, topping Gilas Pilipinas Women B in the championship game, 22-15.
But more than what the Dream have accomplished, Medina highlighted this as a triumph of women’s basketball as a whole.
“More and more eyes are noticing that the girls also got game, na hindi lang mga lalaki ang pwede maglaro ng basketball at ang taas ng level of competition,” she said.
Philippine women’s basketball has really been on the rise in the past few years, but this year so far has seen vast improvements, from the number of local teams holding their own in the Manila Hustle 3×3 Season 2 earlier in the month.
Gilas Pilipinas Women has also formed its own pool independent from that of the five-a-side game, giving more opportunities to the lady ballers to get a crack at representing the country.
All of this, for Medina, is just evidence that women’s basketball is a cause worth fighting for.
